Shirley Cunningham

Counsellor at Turning Point

I am very happy to be commencing private practice at New Life Midwifery and expanding my client base to include women, and the men who support them during this beautiful time of creating new life. With over 18 years as a counsellor working with individuals and families and, over 16 years working as a Registered Nurse in oncology/haematology, I have a person-centred, down to earth, warm approach to therapy. I hold space for clients to openly discuss their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment, my aim is to help clients improve their mental health, life issues, wellbeing, and to live a well-rounded life. I work collaboratively with clients to assist and develop greater self-awareness, understand their struggles, address barriers, and develop existing strengths. I use a variety of treatment modalities such as Solution Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Talk and Walk Therapy and others as required, in order to attend to client treatment goals and personal growth.

I have a particular interest in working with individuals who have

# Loss, Grief and Bereavement eg loss of health, employment, relationships, IVF, a life that once was or bereavement (especially parents who have lost a child),

# Trauma, supporting those in pain physically and psychological.

My passion is to ensure individuals can have the best life possible.

I am a registered nurse who holds a Masters in Counselling, Masters in Health (loss and grief), Graduate Certificate in Paediatrics and Adolescent health, level one Gottman couples training, Michael Yapko Hypnotherapy training. I love to run group sessions, workshops and weekend retreats.

I am available by appointment Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday (excluding public holidays) outside of these hours by arrangement.

1st session $65, subsequent sessions $55.

A snap shot of Shirley:

I am a fun-loving, caring and compassionate grandmother, mother and wife who loves all things family, including dogs, cats, chickens and possums! I love to continually expand my life with both study of health: physical and psychological, and social activities with friends and family involving brunch, movies, theatre, music and grandchildren’s sport. One my favourite quotes is ‘Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful” by Annette Funicello, reminding me to enjoy each day and the opportunities it presents.

“Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness- it is a sign of exceptional personal strength and courage”
